Docklands - Sunday 27th September 2015 - 5pm - 7pm
Scenes on The Yarra” is a unique environmental arts project involving artists and creatives, historians, scientists and indigenous knowledge keepers in a shared learning journey, inspiring artists to create a site-specific group performance and exhibition.
Devised as part of a series of 7 events down the Yarra from headwaters to the sea. This project at Docklands will be a part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival held on World Rivers Day Sunday 27th September 5-7pm. Led by Jeminah Reidy, an experienced arts facilitator and scenographer who has a passion for the Yarra River and the important roll it plays in the lives of Melbournians. She has a wealth of experience in projects involving group artistic collaboration and the environment.
Funded by Melbourne City Council, Melbourne Water and the Yarra Riverkeepers Association, this project will tell a story of the natural and built environment, the Yarra River and Docklands in a unique way, enriching both participants and audience alike.
Docklands consists of extreme environments - the centre of Melbourne's urban renewal was once the cargo, immigration and transit hub, now only remnants of the dock's history remain. Existing waterside communities such as Tall Ships Victoria and the Wooden Boat Builders cling to traditions and skills that echo back a bygone past and will share with us this knowledge.
This will be a fabulous opportunity to experience and witness all that this site offers through art and performance. From what was once an abundant wetland which became an industrial wasteland, to days of industrial dispute and confrontation on the Docks, crowded seafarers taverns to the rave scene in the 1990's have all been part of this site at Docklands.
This is a rare opportunity and we hope you can join us.
