“Blood Red Waters”
Medium: Art installation using found objects, aluminium, string and LED lights.
In this art installation I am fascinated with the idea that everything is connected even in death. I am capturing a visual aesthetic of death and re-discovering the lost history of the old Williamstown morgue. I am fascinated by the by the original site of the morgue standing at the water’s edge where the front door opened into the water beside Gem pier. Where at high tide the morgue would be naturally cleansed by the sea water. The dead bodies hung from the rafters on butcher hooks so that they wouldn’t be eaten by rats. Through the use of symbols I will aesthetically represent this idea; red string to symbolise blood, the suspension of a rectangular box for the dead bodies and the candles to represent the catholic custom of lighting candles as a form of prayer and a show of silent vigil to those who have died and passed through this morgue.
