EOI-Expressions of Interest are currently open for artists of all disciplines, emerging and experienced to be involved with the next Scenes on the Yarra project at Docklands.
Are you creative, love the Yarra and enjoy community projects?
“Scenes on The Yarra” is a unique environmental arts project involving artists and creatives, historians, scientists and indigenous knowledge keepers in a shared learning journey, inspiring artists to create a site-specific group performance and exhibition.
Devised as part of a series of 7 events down the Yarra from headwaters to the sea. This project at Docklands will be a part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival held on World Rivers Day Sunday 27th September 5-7pm. Led by Jeminah Reidy, an experienced arts facilitator and scenographer who has a passion for the Yarra River and the important roll it plays in the lives of Melbournians. She has a wealth of experience in projects involving group artistic collaboration and the environment.
We hope one of those local community artists is you!
Visual artists, performers, musicians, dancers, puppeteers, projection artists, or other creative beings are all welcome!
How will the project work?
Local knowledge holders, e.g. naturalists, historians, indigenous historians, scientists, will share insight into the local landscape at Docklands and the Yarra River with the artists. This part of the project will get the creative juices flowing!
This will be a wonderful opportunity to work on site at Docklands and embracing the Yarra River. Working together, sharing ideas and inspiration, Jeminah will assist the group to develop those ideas into a range of artistic responses. Creating music, dance, sculpture, performance, or art installations – ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! The group energy will guide the experience, and the outcome.
On the final day of the project, an audience will be invited to walk along the North Wharf, and experience the magic the artists have created.

The workshop will run from Friday 18th (12.00-6.30pm), Saturday 19th (10am-4.30pm) and Sunday 20th September (12pm-4.30pm) and then on Friday 25th (12-7pm), Saturday 26th (10am to 4pm) and Sunday 27th September (12noon-10pm) (the performance 5-7pm) install/ performance/ pack-up and feed back session over a shared meal)
Workshops will be held at the Library Hub Docklands and along the North Wharf and will include materials, insurance, advertising, and delicious shared meals during the workshop.
What does it cost?
The entire workshop is FREE.
There is a stipend fee of $200 for each artist and lunch is provided daily.
Funded by Melbourne City Council, Melbourne Water and the Yarra Riverkeepers Association, this project will tell a story of the natural and built environment, the Yarra River and Docklands in a unique way, enriching both participants and audience alike.

• A connection to the older parts of the Docks
• Stories to bring together the community
• The docklands was once a lush thriving natural wonder at the time of our first people, now it is a place of housing, imports and exports, transactions and transit and a sporting precinct
• This is where the City of Melbourne had its roots – the beating heart of the city
• To show where people worked physically hard – Unions were strong, Dockworkers were tough and 44-gallon drums burned in protest or cold weather
• This was the first place to arrive for many immigrants
• Operated 24 hours a day
What Scenes on the Yarra will provide:
• A artist’s stipend of $200, total $200.
• One meal will be provided each day of the workshop.
• Materials and costumes (limited
• Facilitators and production team.
• Health and safety support.
• Public Liability Insurance
• All Permits
Artists need to bring/provide:
• Commitment and enthusiasm
• Willingness to participate in the presentation of a public performance.
• 10 Days of time spent creatively thinking, doing and collaborating.
• Weather appropriate clothing for spring, and working in the out of doors.
• A willingness to be filmed and photographed as part of the documentation process this documentation will also be used for social media, media releases and the SOTY website.
Selection Criteria:
• Demonstrated ability and interest in working collaboratively with artists from diverse backgrounds and practices.
• Demonstrated understanding of experimental arts and willingness to participate collaboratively in a workshop that has a focus on the active exploration of ideas via performance and/or interaction.
• Working in unconventional spaces.
• Hard working- long hours
• Demonstrate a clear understanding of the project and how you may participate.
Preference will be given to artists and performers from the local area.
Please note you must tick all 6 days of attendance on your EOI for or you EOI to be considered.

Once we have received your application we will contact eligible participants to arrange an interview time on Saturday 8th or Sunday 9th August, all successful applicants will be notified the following week.
