“Collection Vessels”
Medium: Recycled Paper & Cardboard, Iron Oxide Pigments
I have been inspired by the traditional vessels created by the Kulin people called the Tarnuk. These bowls are made out of gnarled growths found on the side of Eucalypts and are cut off and hollowed out to create bowls.
In contrast these delicate shell bowls are made from waste paper wrappings and cardboard boxes. Paper products that protect, cover and store our stuff. The fragility of the vessels, highlight the fragility of the items raw resource, the trees and the forests at the headwaters of the Yarra. The porous nature of this material also highlights the importance water is in our lives. The tall mountain forests that surround our city is our collection vessel for our water that sustains us. The Collection Vessels are a creative response, linking the forests, waterways and resources we harvest from nature.
"Beacons"
Medium: Bush Sticks, Red Paint, Red Cotton Fabric
“Red, Red Home to Bed” is a maritime expression, reminding the sailor which way to navigate through the coloured beacons on the return journey from the sea. The red lights indicate the Port side of the boat and the red beacons need to stay on the that side for safe navigation back to harbour. Williamstown is on the Port side of the Bay and leads us back home from the sea.
The red stick markers and the "Sirens" are “warning us” or “enticing us”, to come closer, to look carefully on our final journey.
