Shelley Krycer - Weaving Season

I met Herring Island’s landscape with a curiosity about how its ecosystem functioned while looking out for ways that art making could possibly help to restore some balance. With this in mind, using the native yet invasive plant Phragmites seemed like an ideal material. My process of making has explored the plant’s potential for creating forms, while subtly referencing the fish-traps traditionally made and repaired this time of year by the local Wurundjeri people and also nearby architectural forms.  I hope for this work to create space to listen to the echoes still ringing of people weaving by the river, sharing stories and learning from the land.
